ONYX SHUTTERS

Vinyl shutters are an affordable alternative for climates or rooms where moisture, humidity and extreme temperatures can cause wood to expand, contract or split. Wood finishes are also more vulnerable to fading under direct sunlight, unlike vinyl shutters, which resist fading and cracking.

It’s important, however, to be able to distinguish solid vinyl construction from hollow vinyl construction. Manufacturers don’t always specify how their shutters are constructed.

Hollow vinyl shutters can soften, sag, or deform from heat exposure and turn brittle, chalky or discolored after prolonged exposure to sunlight. Solid vinyl shutters are typically constructed with internal reinforcements that prevents deforming under these conditions.

Dealers who can identify better quality vinyl shutters by their construction are well positioned to help customers get more for their investment.

Hollow vs. Solid Vinyl: Why Construction Matters

Construction can impact both long-term appearance and performance. Without the internal support built into solid vinyl shutters, hollow shutters are prone to warping and softening that can prevent louvers and stiles from closing properly.

More durable solid vinyl shutters, reinforced with internal vinyl ribs or metal components, will hold their shape for years and can often be offered at the same price.

How Can You Tell if a Vinyl Shutter Is Solid?

When evaluating vinyl shutters, look for product specifications that include solid construction and internal reinforcement.

Physical samples also provide clues. A solid vinyl shutter is heavier, and its stiles and other components should not flex or indent easily by hand.

If a manufacturer can’t send samples, ask them directly how their shutters are constructed.

How Onyx Builds Solid Vinyl Shutters

At Onyx, our shutters are constructed with a solid polyvinyl interior and an aluminum core. The solid vinyl makes the shutter dense and rigid, while the aluminum provides structural support, improved performance and longevity. In our experience, aluminum is the most effective core material for resistance against sagging, flexing and deformities.

We also offer our MDF Hybrid shutter, an exclusive design combining three materials for smooth installation, elegance and long-lasting performance. The MDF louvers are lightweight and smooth, which complement the rails and stiles made of basswood for durability and strength. The entire shutter is set in a solid PVC frame for stability, making it a refined and durable choice for years of daily use.

Choosing Solid Vinyl Shutters

Hollow and solid vinyl shutters may look the same on the outside, but Internal construction is a significant factor in shutter performance and durability. Dealers who take the time to consider and understand shutter construction are better able to identify products that meet customer expectations for long-term use and performance.
